Ipoh Hor Fun

This Singaporeans.

I ordered Ipoh Hor Fun, yes, they specifically advertised it as Ipoh Hor Fun, and this is what they give me!

Shame on you. Shame!

Should've known better than to order a Malaysian favorite in Singapore. They keep messing up good food, these Singaporeans. Tsk, tsk.

Getting fat

Settling nicely into my new company and job :)

The only gripe I have is that I've been eating way too much!

Because it's a small team, they're always including me for all the lunches and eating with people with healthy appetites gives me a good appetite too.

Last Friday we had an official welcome lunch for me and another colleague at Marina Bay Golf Course which had an awesome view! I need to work harder so I won't put on weight. The last company has always made me lose a lot of weight so I've got to be careful now that I'm in a different company! It doesn't seem to have the same stress levels to keep it down.

For old time's sake

After one of the lunches, my new colleagues went to look at some stuff in a store that sold a lot of second hand stuff. Stuff right out of the 1980s! It was fun to see stuff that looked like it belonged in my grandparent's home.

When I found this metal mug that reminded me of a mug my grandfather used to drink out of for $1.50 I had to buy it! It was the only one in the store and I haven't seen one for sale ever.

It is brilliant! :)

Termites

The Pastor: Any ideas what to do with termites?

Me: Pest controllers! Fast!

The Pastor: Too late. They ate through a couple of boxes of my books.

Me: Books?!?! Be worried about the building!! You don't want it collapsing!!!

The Pastor: It's the hostel's fault (he lives on university campus). Now that I've rescued my books need to make sure they are termite free. It's been 7 years since I last accessed this books.

Me: Bright side - you lived without it for 7 years, you can pretend you never had them.

The Pastor: Heretic.

Me: Hoarder.

I could literally hear him sulking through the other end of the computer.

So far so good

On my third day at work during a team meeting, my manager mentioned my ex-company's age that celebrates its centennial birthday this year. He thought they were older than my new company.

I interjected saying, "No. WE are older than them! We're 105 years old!"

He picked it up quickly and said, "I'm glad you used WE."

Feeling amazingly comfortable in my new work environment. It's a longer commute. The office isn't snazzy and sexy like how MNCs can be.

But there are good people, really strong management and an exciting product. And I'm walking around feeling like I've been here for 4 months rather than just 4 days.

All is well.

Who's the fairest of them all... not me!

Yesterday, wanting to talk to The Pastor, rang his home number. His 6 year old girl answered the phone.

Me: Hi Ana! Guess who?

Ana: Err...

Me: I'll give you a hint... the prettiest girl you know!

Ana: Err... I know! Aunty Jenny!

*Tries again*

Me: What about the prettiest jie jie (older sister) you know?

Ana: Err... this is very difficult... (speaks in her grown up manner).

*Pouting, told her my name*

Me to The Pastor: Apparently, I'm not the prettiest jie jie.

The Pastor: I know!

Me: Yea, thank yo...

The Pastor: You're welcomed.

Yup. This family sure keeps me grounded.

Settling

The last couple of weeks has been very odd to say the least for me. My mood swings has been intense and I have been breaking out in tears in odd hours of the day. Like a major PMS that's lasting for weeks rather than days.

Someone suggested that periods of transition can take different form. I do think that this transition period has some part to play but goodfreakinggrief this transition thing is getting to be a bit too much! It's been ongoing for a year and I just want it to end.

I was on the way home on Saturday on the bus, and I was thinking to myself, I like Singapore. I like my life here right now.

One of the things I dislike most about Singaporeans when I first moved here was how cold and distrusting they were. Malaysians are warm people who are very quick to embrace and call you friend. Singaporeans seem to like to cling on to their cliques of people and kept everyone else at an arm's length away.

But after a year of building some small bridges into their lives, I've begun to see that while it is not easy for them to trust people quickly, when you have finally earned their trust, it can be a very deep and genuine thing they give to you. It feels even far more deeper and enduring than that Malaysians can even give.

There is something quite special about Singaporeans that I don't fully yet know and appreciate, but it is certainly of a quality that makes me intuitively understand why God deeply loves these people. And I am excited to discover for myself more of them that procures such deep seated love and affection in the heart of God.

God moments

On Saturday morning we had our monthly church leaders' meeting.

One of the leaders asked the Pastor how best do we explain the gospel to someone without offending them.

His response was, "To a person who truly understands what the gospel is saying, they will have only 2 reactions: one is to be offended, the other is to repent and turn to God. Avoid being offensive as a person though."

I remembered many years ago, as a college student, a classmate's cousin was at his deathbed. He was distraught for a while and kept sharing of his despair in the situation and how he had pleaded for anyone to help. Being a young Christian and still unused to the ways of the Spirit, I failed to recognise the nudges the Spirit was giving me to be involved in that situation.

Several things happened in a span of a week. But it came to a final phonecall from the classmate about how he had pleaded with God to save his cousin.

By that time I had prayed a bit and I cannot recall if I had told him that he held the key to the situation - that his cousin could be saved but he needed to believe in Christ.

But I do remember very tentatively and apprehensively saying to him, "Jesus says He is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6)..."

That was as far as I got as he exploded in anger on the audacity of what I was saying when Hinduism was around long before Christ and shouted some other things before hanging up on me. My temper riled, I was going to call him back to argue my case when I felt God stay my hand and said that my classmate's argument is with Him, not with me.

I still am amazed with that conversation. And how the conviction of the gospel was strong then. Pastor called that a God moment. It is when a person is confronted with the conviction of the gospel and make a decision in the face of it. We hope that even should the person decide against God, there may be other God moments for such a decision to be reversed, but no man can know if and when such opportunities would come up again.

But I do recall when I had prayed for this classmate prior to his rejection of Jesus, I had a vision of him preaching to thousands. I hope it is still something that can come to pass.

Bang

Funny moment of today.

Was in lift with few colleagues heading out for lunch when Kenny suddenly snapped to attention and went...

Kenny: Bang! Bang! Bang!

And moved forward from the back of the lift to the front with intense focus with his hands stretched forward. And then he slapped the lift door.

Kenny: Mosquito. I hate them.

He showed us the bang (Hokkien for mosquito) on his palm.

*Slap hand on forehead*
